Staying Healthy This Winter

If you’re coming to the CrossFit KMK daily WODs, and you’re eating clean (paleo), you’re headed in the right direction to keeping yourself healthy. But what else can one do to stay healthy, and fight off nasty bugs this winter?

Vitamin S – SLEEP.  This is probably the most important aspect of health, but the most overlooked. Ideally the human body needs 8 hours of sleep per night. Get as close to this as you can.

Vitamin D – In the winter months we lack sunlight which our bodies use to make vitamin D naturally. Vitamin D is very important in many different functions in the human body, including the immune system. So, keep your immune system happy, and take a vitamin D supplement. Make sure you are taking with a meal with healthy fats in it, as vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin and needs this to be properly absorbed.

Vitamin C – A powerful antioxidant, which is well studied and well known  in its ability to prevent and fight off the common cold and other infections.

Zinc – Often times this is bundled with vitamin C as a cold remedy. Zinc is also very important in immune function.

Garlic – Used for millennia and well researched for many health benefits, including being an  immune system booster. Plus, it tastes great! Throw some garlic into your cooking.

Echinacea –  A great herb to use when you feel a cold coming on. Echinacea will speed up recovery time and get you back in the gym!
